If you are interested in having your child become a part of scouting, here is how to get started

  1. Make sure your scout is in elementary school. We accept all children from K-5, so if they are in elementary school, we are glad to have them become a part of our pack. Pack 17 is open to all genders so our only restriction is grade level. Our standard areas are Morningside, Virginia Highland, Midtown and Ansley Park but we are glad to have scouts from wherever.
  2. Take a look at the schedule here and make sure this looks like something you and your scout would enjoy. While the time commitment is very low, we are not a “drop off” organization so be prepared to spend some time with like-minded parents having quality time with their scouts. You can expect to do 1-2 scouting activities a month.
  3. Sign up with BSA on this site for yourself as an adult then register and pay for each scout you are enrolling. This costs about $75 per scout which all goes to the BSA. If this presents a hardship to your family, please let us know at pack17scouting@gmail.com and we can connect you to Friends of Scouting which will help waive those fees.
  4. Make a payment to Pack 17 using this link for dues which will be used to pay for all the camping, badges, belt loops, T-shirts, pinewood derby cars, model rocket gear, park fees and pack meals. In short, it is intended to cover all the costs for the year for your scout. Again, if this presents a hardship to your family, please let us know at pack17scouting@gmail.com and we will do what we can to help you out. We want to provide scouting to as many families as possible.
  5. Fill out health forms for you and your scout(s). Every adult who goes camping will need to fill one of these out.
  6. Purchase a uniform for your scouts grade level. We should have these items available during the pack kickoff meeting or you can buy them at the scout store at 75N and 285. If you are interested in utilizing any “previously worn” items we may have available, then let us know and we will help you out. Items that are required for all scouts are:
    • Hat (changes with grade level)
    • Neckerchief (changes with grade level)
    • Neckerchief slide
    • Shirt
    • Belt (not required but helpful since belt loops are able to fit over it)
    • Shorts/Pants/Socks are available but not required, as your scout can wear their own.
  7. If you wish to assist with the pack, we’d be very appreciative as Pack 17 is entirely volunteer run. You can fill out an adult application and get registered.
  8. Show up and have a great time. You don’t have to make it to everything but the more you come, the more fun you’ll have.

If you have any questions or comments, please let us know at pack17scouting@gmail.com and we will do whatever we can to help.
